White-bearded Wildebeest are an East African species also known as the White-bearded Gnu. The White-bearded Wildebeest is a subspecies of the more recognisable Blue Wildebeest for those who have hunted in Southern Africa. The main difference between the two species is that White-bearded Wildebeest have a white beard and a lighter hide colouring as opposed to the Blue Wildebeest’s black beard and darker hide colouring. Horn shape and body size wise, they both look alike. White-bearded Wildebeest are one of two Wildebeest species that may be hunted in northern Tanzania. They are most commonly found on outfitters price lists who operate in the Masailand region. Those who have witnessed the Serengeti Wildebeest migration either in real life or on television should indeed know these are all White-bearded Wildebeest. This great migration with more 1.5 million animal’s passes through the Maswa region in January and February. Remnants of this great herd remain and can be hunted during the hunting season. White-bearded Wildebeest are classified as a species of least concern by the IUCN and no special export permits are required. A minimum of a 7 day hunting license is required to hunt one of these specimens.
