Big Game
South Carolina’s big game species include White-tailed deer, Wild turkey, and Black bear (in limited areas).
Deer hunting in South Carolina requires a hunting license, a Big Game Permit, and deer tags. Residents generally receive a certain number of free antlered deer tags and the option to purchase antlerless tags or additional buck tags. Non-residents do not receive any free tags with their license – they must purchase a set of deer tags to hunt deer. Antlerless deer may only be taken on designated days or with separate Antlerless tags which are available for purchase.
Wild Turkey: South Carolina requires turkey tags for all turkey hunters. Residents must request their free set of turkey tags each spring. Non-residents must purchase turkey tags together with a hunting license and Big Game Permit (or a Sportsman license).
Black Bear: Bear hunting is limited to certain regions and is usually a draw, these hunts are primarily for residents.
Small Game
South Carolina small game (Squirrel, Rabbit, Quail, Dove, Waterfowl, etc.) requires a basic hunting license.
Migratory birds (including doves and waterfowl) also require a Migratory Bird Permit (HIP certification) which is free but mandatory. Waterfowl hunters need the Federal Duck Stamp and the SC State Migratory Waterfowl Permit.
Certain small game species have special permits: Alligator hunting in SC is by lottery tag only. Trapping requires a different license. Coyotes, armadillos, hogs are unprotected and can be hunted year-round (on private land) with a license, no bag limit or special permit.
