Lichtenstein hartebeest hunting in Tanzania

Lichtenstein Hartebeest is a medium to large size antelope refered to locally as a Kongoni. These Hartebeest have a dull yellow-brown coat with a lighter tail colour. Both sexes have backwards curving s-shaped horns although the horns of the bulls are much thicker (heavier) at the base than the cows. Black patches are sometimes seen on the shoulder caused by the animals rubbing their horns on the side of their bodies. Liechtenstein Hartebeest is found in the southern, central and western regions of Tanzania where water is more plentiful than in the semi-arid region of Masailand. Lichtenstein Hartebeest prefers open areas between vleis (marshes), woodlands and floodplains. They form small herds that are dominated by a herd bull. Males can often be seen surveying the surrounding area by standing on top of a termite mound to survey the surrounding area. Hartebeest has the reputation of being one of Africa’s fastest-running antelope. Lichtenstein Hartebeest is classified as a species of least concern by the IUCN and no special hunting permits are required. A Tanzanian hunting licence must be purchased before the hunt begins.
