About hunting in Ohio

While Ohio may not be as widely known for its white-tailed deer hunting as states like Iowa and Illinois, some of the largest trophy bucks in the nation come from the Buckeye State. Plentiful deer and a thriving population of wild turkeys provide great opportunities for hunters. Plains and agricultural areas cover the majority of the state, but the rugged southeastern corner of Ohio features steep hills and forests similar to those in Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Ducks and geese, as well as upland birds including grouse, quail, doves, and pheasants, provide opportunities for hunters all around the state. In addition to an annual hunting license, you must purchase a Special Deer Permit to hunt deer in Ohio. A blaze orange vest, coat, jacket, or overalls must be worn during the deer seasons. Firearms for deer hunting are limited to shotguns, muzzleloaders, and straight-walled centerfire cartridges.
