Helmeted guineafowl hunting in Tanzania

Guineafowl hunting by foreign clients is mostly limited to one very impressive bird, the Vulturine Guineafowl. Two other species occur, the well-known Helmeted Guineafowl and the lesser-known Crested Guineafowl. Vulturine Guineafowl is the largest bird in the Guineafowl family. It has a very distinctive, easily recognisable blue breast with black and white plumage. It is endemic to Eastern Africa and favours the more arid areas. Helmeted Guineafowl is the most common of all Guineafowl and has even been introduced to the USA where it is known as a Guinea hen. They are widely spread across the Tanzanian savannah and semi-arid regions. Crested Guineafowl have bluish-white polka dot spots, a crested toupee plume above a naked face with a deep ruby coloured eye. Their distribution is limited to forests and thickets where they forage for berries and insects. Distribution and availability vary from area to area. A list of huntable species and the best season for such a hunt should be discussed with your Outfitter. Bird hunting licenses must be purchased before going on safari.
