Coke's hartebeest hunting in Tanzania

Coke’s Hartebeest is a medium to large size antelope, also known as a Kongoni in East Africa. They stand high at the shoulders with a slight hump and a sloping back. They are light brown with heavy, deeply ridged, lyre-shaped horns that first curve sharply backwards opening into a lyre-shaped handlebar look that gives them a very unique appearance. This gregarious species is confined to the grasslands and savannahs. Coke’s Hartebeest is only found in East Africa and cannot be hunted in Kenya which closed all hunting operations in 1977. This means they can now only be hunted in Masailand and northwards through the Maswa region. Coke’s Hartebeest prefers feeding along shallow grassy valleys in pursuit of the best grazing grasses. As a species group, they are known to be one of the fastest running antelope in Africa and when slowing down often run with a particular Hartebeest gait. They are a particular inquisitive species which often allows a hunter an opportunity to get into shooting range or a second chance when they run away and stop to look back. Coke’s Hartebeest is classified as a species of least concern by the IUCN, no special export and import permits are required. They may be hunted on a minimum of a 7-day license in Tanzania.
