Blacktail Deer Archery Hunt

My cousin and I recently went on our first-ever archery hunt. We were looking for a guide and we are really glad to have chosen JPC.
John is very professional, knowledgeable, and passionate about archery and hunting. He was also incredibly fun to be around, which made the whole experience enjoyable and memorable.

Good guide for a real hunt on public land

He is very knowledgeable about where the animals are and where they move. He shows you what to look for and all of this is on public land. While my hunt wasn't successful, it's public land and wild animals. They don't always behave and for most people I know who are successful in these areas it usually takes 3 to 5 days of hunting. These guided hunts are usually 1 to 2 days. But that's ok, because by the end of the hunt, you don't have to leave. You now know some good spots to hunt and you can continue the hunt as long as you like. You can come back and hunt it later. The information alone is worth the money. I went on a pig hunt and encountered a bear and leaned not just where the pigs are but the quail, the pheasant, elk, deer and their patterns. Even saw a nice buck. Had I had my archery tag for the unit I could have come back the next week if I had the time.
I have booked hunts with other guides and while I may have been more successful in actually shooting an animal, the hunt seemed more about the kill than the actual pursuit. The other guides offered the Disney park ride experience version of hunting where all you did was show up to a private ranch and pull the trigger on an animal with no hunting pressure. This hunt was not that. This included a lot of glassing of public land driving to good overwatch spot and some hiking to get in a position to be successful. In other words it was the real deal.
If you are getting into hunting and are looking for someone to teach you how to be a successful hunter or to show you some great public land spots this is your guy.
Would have been nice to get a pig, but that's public land hunting. Not the guide's fault. And this can be rectified by simply hunting longer.

You’ll learn a thing or two from John, but it’s mostly road hunting. He takes you around and shows you what to look for when scouting for bears and shares photos of animals in the area. Most of the time is spent driving around glassing, hoping to catch a bear moving midday on a hillside. I did end up seeing a sow and cub on the last day. If you are looking for a spot and stalk this isn't your hunt. I spent about 11 days up there in late October, so maybe most of the bears had already started denning. I’ll probably try going earlier this year.
