When to hunt Jackson's Hartebeest?

Jackson’s Hartebeest can only be hunted during the Ugandan hunting season, which opens on 1 July and closes on 31 December. Their behaviour is not greatly affected by a change in the seasons, but an abundance of food usually stimulates mating activity, making old and mature animals easier to identify and approach. Light rains can be expected in November and December so try to avoid this time if planning a safari.

Jackson’s Hartebeest primarily relies on its vision to spot hunters and predators. They are found in open grasslands, savannahs and woodland habitats where they will make a snorting alarm call of any approaching danger and will run away in single file. Being inquisitive animals they often stop to look back giving you the opportunity for a quick shot.

Why hunt Jackson's Hartebeest?

These very alert animals make for a challenging spot-and-stalk hunt, the preferred method of Hartebeest hunting. Hunters should be prepared to take a long shot.
