Chacma Baboons are the only species of Baboon found in Zimbabwe and found from the Zambezi River in the north to the Limpopo River in the south. These extremely adaptable species are found in a range of habitats, from riverine forests to the mountains of Eastern Zimbabwe. Having an omnivorous diet they eat anything from grass seeds, flowers, fruit to insects and even small mammals. They are a water-dependent species so if you are ever lost and need water, just follow the Baboons and they will lead you to permanent water. Baboons can be extremely destructive, raiding crops, killing domestic livestock (goat & sheep lambs) and raiding houses in search of food. In the wild, they feed on plant material, fruit and insects often making a nuisance of themselves by rolling rocks onto the road in search of bugs and scorpions to eat. When hunted as vermin they can become extremely cunning animals and avoid any contact with man. They have extremely good eyesight and with sentries posted by the troop, they will alert others of any impending danger with a loud bark. CITES permits are required for the import and export of Baboons to control the international trade in primates. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) also have special import regulations for the importation of Baboon trophies into the USA.
