Warthogs need little introduction and are now even movie stars. Both females and males have tusks, the females have one set of warts just below the eye with small tusks, whilst the males have two sets of warts, one set below the eye and another set just above the much more pronounced tusks. Tusk length is often affected by the Warthogs home range, those living in sandy soils generally have longer tusks to those on the rockier soils where their tusks are worn from being used as digging tools when foraging for food. Warthogs are found throughout the country from Western Tanzania, Southern Tanzania (Selous) and even in the more arid Masailand. Warthogs are ugly to some but they are an animal that shows the most character. This is one animal that you often get to bump into at a short distance and they look at you as if in total surprise before giving a grunt and runoff. They normally run a short distance, stop tune around and look back as if still in disbelief. After the next grunt, there is no stopping them. Warthogs are classified as a species of least concern by the IUCN and no special hunting permits are required. However, Warthog trophies exported to the USA need to comply with the USDA trophy import regulations.
