Steenbok (Steenbuck) is a reddish-brown small antelope normally found in pairs and may be confused with a Sharpe’s Grysbok which is similar in size but has distinctive grey flecking hair follicles in their coat. Some European hunters refer to this species as a “Steinbuck”. Only the males have horns and if they are as long as or longer than the horns, you know you are looking at a trophy quality animal. Steenbok is found in the southern, western and parts of the central areas of the country with preferred habitat types which include open woodland and grasslands areas. Part of their habitat requirements is patches of long grass to be used as cover to avoid predators. Often they will lie with their necks and head stretched out flat on the ground with their ears flattened against their heads to avoid detection. They are best hunted early morning and late afternoon. During the heat of the day, they can be found lying up in the shade of a tree in an area that offers good visibility of their surroundings. This “Tiny Ten” species is water independent and may be encountered anywhere during your hunt. Classified as a species of least concern by the IUCN, no special hunting permits are required.
