Grant’s gazelle, a medium sized antelope may be confused with the smaller Thomson’s gazelle. When in a mixed group it is easy to see the size difference. The other main distinguishing features between the two species are that in the majority of cases Grant’s gazelles have a no large black horizontal stripe across their sides and the white rump patch extends beyond the root of the tail. The males have longer lyre shaped ringed horns than the Thomson’s gazelle. The northern subspecies occurs in Ethiopia, Sudan and Kenya and the southern subspecies is the species hunted in Masailand and Maswa regions of Tanzania. The two subspecies differ very slightly in colour but their basic features remain the same. Grant’s gazelle’s habitat preference is open grasslands and shrubland with good visibility to avoid predation from the larger predators. They are extremely fast and can easily outrun most predators. They are mixed feeders preferring to browse rather than graze and well adapted to surviving in their preferred semi-arid areas where competition for food is minimal. Grant’s gazelle may only be hunted on a minimum of a 7-day license and are classified as a species of least concern by the IUCN, no special export permits are required.
