Spotted Hyena hunting in Zimbabwe

Spotted Hyena may also be referred to as “Laughing Hyena” from the cackling noises they make when excited. This mysterious nocturnal beast is at the core of many traditional and witchcraft stories. Apart from being accomplished hunters, they are known as scavengers that can even drive a pride of Lions off a kill. Spotted Hyena have been exterminated from the agriculturally rich central plateau of the country and found in high concentrations in and around the many national parks that have thriving Lion populations. They are mostly hunted in Matetsi and Zambezi Valley concessions. When baiting for Lions and Leopard you can rest assured if there are Hyenas in the area they will also be attracted to the bait. They are predominantly nocturnal animals but will never turn down an opportunity for a meal during the day. Even descending vultures at a kill or carcass will attract the attention of Hyenas during daylight hours. Although Spotted Hyena numbers are declining, this species is classified of least concern by the IUCN. Prearranged licenses must be purchased before the hunt.
