Everyone rates Argentina as the dove shooting mecca of the world but let me share a secret with you, South Africa is not far behind. Your shoulder can only take so much punishment before you cannot shoot any more. South Africa's dove and pigeon shooting is highly underrated and more manageable and less strain on the pounding your shoulder takes on those frantic Argentina dove hunts.
Doves and pigeons are most commonly hunted near cattle feedlots and recently harvested corn and sunflower fields. The season normally starts around May/June at the start of the grain harvesting season and lasts for as long there is corn to be harvested. Reputedly, the Free State province has the best pigeon and dove shooting in the country.
A South African speciality is a Rock Pigeon shoot. Locally known as “Rockies”, these extremely fast flying birds zig zag in the wind and are guaranteed to test your bird shooting skills to your limits!
