Livingstone Eland hunting in Mozambique

Livingstone’s Eland is Mozambique’s largest antelope. This massive oxlike beast weighs up to 900kg (2000 lbs) and is a greyish brown colour with faint thin white vertical stripes that fade with age. Both sexes have heavy backward slanting spiral horns and the bulls have a prominent dewlap that turns grey with age and a tassel of long hair on the forehead, known as a brush. Livingstone Eland is found countrywide but is extremely rear in the south. They are best hunted in areas along the Zambezi River northwards towards the northern border with Tanzania in the Niassa region. Hunting Livingstone’s Eland can be a demanding hunt very similar to a traditional walk and stalk characteristics of a Buffalo hunt. Being neither territorial nor remaining within a home range, these animals wander great distances in search of suitable feeding areas. The hunt all starts by finding some fresh tracks and taking the spoor trying to catch up with the moving animal. Classified as a species of least concern by the IUCN, no special hunting permits are required.
