Kob hunting in Central African Republic

The Kob found in the Central African Republic (CAR) is a robust, medium-sized antelope closely related to Reedbuck, Lechwe and Waterbuck. Its colouration ranges from golden to reddish-brown, complemented by a distinctive white throat patch and underbelly. Notably, only males bear horns, which are thick and lyrate in shape. Two subspecies of Kob are found in the CAR, the Ubangui and Bahr-Keeta Kob. However, for the record book purposes, they are listed as Western Kob. They thrive in open flat areas with abundant fresh grazing near permanent water sources. Female Kobs often form large herds that can number over a thousand, particularly as they migrate in search of lush green grass. During the dry season, these female herds are shadowed by male bachelor groups, which can include over a hundred individuals. In densely populated floodplains, most males establish territories, while others gather in clustered areas known as leks. Despite their numbers and widespread distribution, kobs are classified as a species of least concern by the IUCN. Consequently, no special import or export permits are required for their hunting. However, hunters must obtain Kob hunting licenses before embarking on their safari adventures.
