Hyena hunting in Mozambique

Two species of Hyena occur in Mozambique, the Spotted Hyena and the Brown Hyena. The Brown Hyena is only found along the western border with South Africa (Kruger National Park) up to the Eastern Highlands of Zimbabwe. Recorded sightings of this species are extremely rare. The Spotted Hyena occurs country wide and being an apex scavenger and predator are doing well in some areas. Efforts are also underway to reintroduce Spotted Hyenas to their former home ranges to increase the viability of the reduce populations in those areas, like the Zinave National Park core area. To date these introductions have been highly successful and the country's wildlife agencies rewilding program aims to return many of their wildlife areas back to their former glory. Many of these areas were devastated during the civil war conflict in the late 90s when the wildlife was hunted to feed the opposing troops and staving villages caught up in the conflict. Spotted Hyena are classified as a species of least concern by the IUCN and not special permits are require to hunt these animals.
