The Zambian hunting season runs from the beginning of May to the end of November. In Tanzania the hunting season is from 1 July to 31 December. The Namibian hunting season is from February 1 to November 30. The best months to hunt Hyenas are the cooler winter months especially if you are baiting as the baits last longer before going really rancid even though hyenas are not averse to eating really rotten meat.

Hyenas may be hunted as a trophy of opportunity during a hunt but in most instances it takes some effort. If you are hunting lions or leopards you can use the same bait to lure in a Hyena. Also being nocturnal they are not very active during the day. Striped and Brown Hyenas are great scavengers and can be baited with some effort. However a successful hunt may take some patience and best is for the Outfitter to pre-bait prior to your arrival. Spotted Hyenas may be hunted the same way but hunting most of their own prey, they can be enticed to a bait by using a predator caller where permissible.

Schabrackenhyäne
Very rare sighting of a Brown Hyena during the day at De Wet Hunting Safaris. The Brown Hyena is an incredibly shy nocturnal animal which often lives undetected in close proximity to man.
Why hunt Hyena?
These bone crushing scavengers make impressive full mounts. Due to the fact that they have incredibly powerful jaws, their skulls make an interesting skull mount to compare to the other large predators in your trophy collection. They also play a big role in various African folklaw and witchcraft stories which just adds to the aura of mystery surrounding these animals. In certain areas they may become problem animals, especially to stock farmers, so if you want to get on the right side of a farmer or community by helping him with their predator control program, you will always be welcomed back for another hunt.
