Helmeted Guineafowl hunting in Zimbabwe

Guineafowl is known as Guinea Hens in the USA. Two species of Guineafowl occur in Zimbabwe. The most common and regularly hunted is the blue-faced Helmeted Guineafowl. The other is the Crested Guineafowl, this strikingly beautiful bird has ruby red eyes and a distinguishing crest of curly black feathers. Helmeted Guineafowl can be hunted country wide whilst the Crested Guineafowl distribution is limited to the Southern Lowveld of Zimbabwe and Zambezi Valley. Crested Guineafowl hunting is normally limited to avid bird collectors. Helmeted Guineafowl hunts can be arranged in the corn-growing agricultural areas of Zimbabwe and are often hunted during a big game safari to be cooked as a camp speciality. Guineafowl is classified as a species of least concern by the IUCN and no special hunting permits are required.
