Guineafowl hunting in Zimbabwe

Two species of Guineafowl occur in Zimbabwe, the most well-known Helmeted Guineafowl is found throughout the country and the Crested Guineafowl which is only found in the Zambezi Valley. Helmeted Guineafowl are also known as Guinea Hens in the USA, where they have been introduced. These birds are mostly hunted for the pot. Helmeted Guineafowl may occur in large flocks and are easily recognisable by the bony casque on their heads. Their heads and upper necks are predominantly blue with red facial skin. The Crested Guineafowl has a thick crest of black curly feathers and a ruby red eye. These birds are normally only hunted by collectors and do not taste as good as their close cousins, the Helmeted Guineafowl. Both Guineafowl species are listed as species of least concern by the IUCN.
