Nine species of Gazelle occur in Africa. The Gazelle group is well represented in Ethiopia (5 species) but some subspecies are locally extinct. For some subspecies numbers and distribution have declined rapidly over the decades. The following Gazelles occur or were once represented in Ethiopia: Dorcas Gazelle: Subspecies Isabelline, presumed extinct. Listed as vulnerable by the IUCN. Speke’s Gazelle: A small pocket remains in the west of Ethiopia. Listed as endangered by the IUCN. Soemmerring’s Gazelle: Four subspecies occurred in Ethiopia, namely, Sudan Soemmerring’s Gazelle, Erlanger’s Soemmerring Gazelle in the west, Borani Soomerling’s Gazelle in the central regions and the Somali Soemmerring’s Gazelle. Soemmering’s Gazelle is still hunted in Ethiopia today. Listed as vulnerable by the IUCN. Grants Gazelle: Three subspecies occurred in Ethiopia, namely, Lake Gazelle or Abyssinian Grants Gazelle, Rainey’s and Bright’s Gazelle. Listed as a species of least concern by the IUCN. Red-Fronted Gazelle: Heuglin’s Gazelle occurs in the northwest of the country. Listed as endangered by the IUCN.
