Caracal hunting in Zimbabwe

Caracal (also called a Lynx) are a medium size rufous-fawn, red to dark brick red lynx-like cat resembling an American bobcat with tufted black ears. They may be found in a variety of habitats from rugged mountainous terrain to semi-arid desert habitats. This solitary nocturnal predator is an efficient killer, feeding on animals the size of mice to an adult Impala. They are also known for their acrobatic skills, jumping high into the air to catch flushing birds. Caracals are found countrywide and mostly hunted at night in those areas that permit night hunting. They can become extremely problematic to small livestock farmers (sheep and goats) and are not tolerated by local farming communities. Caracals are very responsive to predator callers where not overused. In many cases, they are hunted as a trophy of opportunity and by hunters staking out a waterhole. Caracals are classified as a species of least concern by the IUCN, no special hunting permits are required.
