Where to hunt Blesbuck
Blesbuck, correctly spelt as Blesbok is described from the white blaze on their muzzle, known as a “bles” in Afrikaans. This species was once endemic to the open grasslands of South Africa but has now been introduced into mixed woodland areas and the semi-arid grassland regions of Namibia. This now-common species was once reduced to being endangered before a concerted conservation effort was made to save the species. In many instances, this species has crossbred with the similar-looking Bontebok contaminating many animals' DNA structure, which is a concern to scientists. Today due to selective intensive breeding numerous colour variations of the species are available for hunting.

Blesbok are now a commonly hunted species on the Highveld (high plateau) grasslands of South Africa and found on the majority of properties throughout the country, as well as selected properties in Namibia. Daily hunting rates range from $300-$450 per day and trophy fee prices are driven by localised availability and colour. These prices range from $250 for a Common Blesbuck to $1790 for a rare colour variant.

Blesbok may be hunted year-round In South Africa and from February 1 until November 30 in Namibia. The best months to hunt Blesbok are May until September when it is a lot cooler being winter, compared to the hot summer months. During the rut that occurs from March to May, it is easier to identify the males due to their courtship behaviour as both males and females have horns.

Blesbok are easy to spot living out on the open plains but not so easy to approach. Being mostly a herd animal with good eyesight means that they are difficult to stalk, always milling around and bobbing their heads up and down. They are best hunted in the early morning and late afternoon when feeding and not so bunched up, as the case during the middle of the day. These behavioural traits make the selection of a trophy out of a large herd very difficult and there are normally no reference points (trees) out on the open plains for use by your professional hunter to ensure you are both focused on the same animal.

Common Blesbok are an affordable species hunted by most first time hunters. Although easy to spot, they do make a challenging hunt and are often targeted by professional hunters as a good animal for hunters to start gaining their African hunting experience and confidence before moving onto more species that are more difficult to hunt. For the collector, this species comes in numerous colours ranging from the Common Blesbok (brown) and White Blesbok, the two originally accepted record book colours, to the colour variants that include Copper, Yellow and Saddle-backed variants.
