African Wild Cat hunting in South Africa

An African Wild Cat is closely related to a domestic cat. These silvery, grey-brown cats are approximately the same size as the average household cat. They are found in a wide diversity of habitats from mountains, forests, grasslands and fynbos to the semi-arid areas. However, they are absent from the true desert regions. Although they are found throughout the country they are mostly hunted as a trophy of opportunity when the opportunity arises. African Wild Cats are best hunted in the semi-arid regions of the country like the Northern Cape and North West provinces. If this is your targeted species you genuinely do need some luck as you will be spending much time driving around at night shining a spotlight looking for a specimen to hunt. African Wild Cats feed on small rodents, lizards, snakes and birds, even prey of a similar size, namely rabbits, hares and springhares. Like all cats, they hiss and hum when threatened and they preyed upon by all the larger predators and birds of prey. African Wild Cats are classified as a species of least concern by the IUCN but a special night hunting permit and license may be required in some provinces. A Threatened or Protected Species (TOPS) permit is required to hunt the closely related Black-footed Cat.
