Spotted Hyena hunting in Mozambique

Spotted Hyenas are the most common hyena species in Africa and are also known as “Laughing Hyena” from the cackling noises they make when excited. Hyenas are yellowish-brown with dark spots and rounded eras. They stand high on the shoulders with a sloping back and have an ungainly walk and gait. Gender identification is difficult as the female's genitalia mimic a male's reproductive organs. Spotted Hyenas are found mostly in the western and northern areas of Mozambique and seem to thrive in areas where Lions still occur. Numbers have declined in some areas but the country is actively reintroducing new bloodlines and populations to places like Zinave National Park. Spotted Hyenas are known as scavengers and in some cases will even drive Lions off of a kill. They are hunted over bait and will often visit Lion and Leopard baiting sites. These animals have incredibly strong bone-crushing jaws and are recognised as one of Africa’s most successful hunters. Although not built for speed they have incredible stamina and a clan will easily run down its prey. Although Spotted Hyena numbers are declining, this species is classified of least concern by the IUCN. Prearranged licenses must be purchased before the hunt.
