Spotted hyena hunting in Ethiopia

Both Striped and Spotted Hyenas occur and can be hunted in Ethiopia. However, there are strict protocols in place when hunting Striped Hyenas and a special permit must be purchased before hunting. Striped Hyenas are monogamous, mating for life as opposed to their close cousins. The more common social Spotted Hyena live and hunt in large clans. Although classified as scavengers, these Hyenas are quite capable of bringing down large prey species, especially when operating in groups. The Striped Hyena relies more on scavenging for food as they do not have the cooperation of the rest of the clan while out searching for food. Spotted Hyenas may be hunted as a trophy of opportunity when found feeding on a carcass but the most successful way to hunt both Hyenas is by using a bait. Temporary blinds are built for this purpose and most Hyenas are shot in the early morning using this hunting method. Hyenas are classified as a species of least concern by the IUCN.
