Roan hunting in Namibia

Roan Antelope is Africa’s second largest antelope, with similar markings to its close relative, the Sable Antelope. Named after its brownish colour, it also has a face mask like a Sable. It is a thick set animal with long pointed ears and prefers peace and tranquillity from other animals by choosing to inhabit underutilised areas with long grass. Roan are not one of the most popular trophies but rather sought after as a speciality animal by returning hunters to Africa. Roan are found as free ranging animals in the Caprivi where populations of these species are thriving in protected environments, like the Mahango Game Park. They may also be hunted on numerous game farms in the northern and central regions of Namibia. Roan are a water dependent species, mostly drinking in the late afternoon. Once having had their fill they often lie around before heading off in the evening in search of grazing. Make a point of checking the watering points if you are in search of a good trophy. Roan are listed as a species of least concern by the IUCN and no special hunting permits are required other than the normal hunting license arranged by your outfitter.
