Where to hunt Red Duiker
Also known as the Natal Red Duiker, this species occurs along the eastern seaboard of Africa, from Dar es Salaam in Tanzania, through Mozambique, down as far south as East Coast of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa. They also occur in the eastern parts of Mpumalanga Province with an isolated pocket distributed in the Soutpansberg Mountains of the Limpopo Province of South Africa. They may be hunted in all three countries.
Price distribution
In Tanzania, a Red Duiker may be hunted on a 16 or 21 day license. Daily Rates for these safaris range from $1,650-1,950 per day with a trophy fee between $ 300-900. In Mozambique you will be required to book a minimum of a 6-10 day hunt, with a daily rate of $600-$700 and pay a trophy fee of $1,050-1,450. Similar hunts are available in South Africa with a trophy fee for a Red Duiker ranging from $1,000-1,800 and daily rates between $350-450 per day.

When to hunt Red Duiker?
Red Duiker may be hunted year round In South Africa. In Mozambique the season is open from April 1 to November 30. In Tanzania the season is from July to December. The best months for hunting Red Duiker are the dry months of June to October when most of the foliage has fallen off the trees making for better visibility. These dead leaves and any fruit falling at the time attracts the Red Duikers out into the more open spaces among the forest floor.

Hunting methods
Being less secretive than most forest Duikers, this species may be hunted around forest margins and opening on the forest floor. A slow walk and stalk along a forest footpath or track normally yields up an opportunity for a shot. Another favourite habitat type is the dense bush or forest growing along rivers and around water bodies where many fruit bearing, especially Wild Fig trees are found. Fallen flowers and fruit knocked down by Monkeys and Baboons cannot be resisted by these Duiker. Red Duiker also respond well to antelope distress calls.
Why hunt Red Duiker?
Of the 22 Duiker species, 17 are huntable. Although not big and dangerous, the Duikers take some serious hunting. A Red Duiker hunt will test your patience and makes for an interesting forest hunt. Owing to their size, Red Duiker make marvelous full mounts especially when mounted with a little bit of habitat. A Duiker collection may also comprise of skull mounts but to truly appreciate your efforts you need to consider full mounting most of your trophies to appreciate the different sizes and colours. Also keep in mind that Red Duiker are one of the species listed as the “Tiny Ten”.
