When to hunt Puku?

Puku may be hunted from May 1 until November 30 in Zambia and the hunting season opens on July 1 and closes on December 31 in Tanzania. The best time to hunt is the dry season, with June to August being the prime months when the temperatures are milder compared to the hot summer months. Hunting later in the year from mid-September to October locally known as the ‘suicide month’, can be unpleasantly hot. Avoid the early part of the year as it can be unseasonably wet and muddy.

When hunting Puku you need to concentrate your efforts along the floodplains and open grasslands. These animals never venture far from water and will be found actively feeding at dawn and dusk. Once sighted during a walk and stalk hunt you will need to plan your approach as there is often not much cover on the open floodplains. Try to use the treeline cover along the edge of the floodplain as best as possible.

Why hunt Puku?

Puku hunts always take you through some of the most spectacular semi-aquatic habitats where you are always like to encounter a few surprises, like sleeping hippos or wallowing buffalo, so keep your eyes peeled. Shooting over flat surfaces (floodplains) will be a test of your long distance marksmanship and your distance judgement. Puku make great shoulder and half mounts. They also look good when the skull is shield mounted.
