When to hunt Ostrich?

Ostrich can be hunted year round in South Africa. In Namibia, the hunting season opens on 1 February and closes on 30 November each year. In Tanzania the season is from July to December and in Ethiopia from October until June the following year. Being more of a trophy of opportunity it can be hunted anytime of the day or year. However, just for comfort sake it is normally best hunted in the cooler winter months when the temperatures are more bearable.

Jagdart alle Jagdarten (16)

They have excellent eyesight and hearing. When alarmed they will run away at an incredible speed covering ground at a rapid speed creating distance between you and your target preventing any chance of a shot. The best method to hunt Ostrich is on foot once sighted from a distance. Then you need to start stalking them using as much cover as possible. Normally only males are hunted and it is very difficult to hunt these birds when in a flock, so look for a single bird before starting your stalk. If you are bow hunting, the best way to hunt is from a blind with a bait site as they do not need water on a regular basis.

Why hunt Ostrich?

Besides being some of the most sought after venison to eat, these birds make magnificent full mounts if you have the space. They can also be mounted as shoulder mounts, half mounts with their tails much like the popular turkey shield mounts. Their feet can be used at lamp stands or bookends. Some hunters collect them for their leather and turn them into much sought after leather products like handbags, jackets or even cowboy boots.
