Nyala hunting in Mozambique

The Nyala, once referred to as the Angus Bushbuck, is a creature of legend in African folklore, celebrated as one of the most beautiful animals ever created by God. The white dots adorning its face are believed to mark where God’s fingertips touched its head in admiration. This medium-sized, spiral-horned antelope shares a close kinship with the smaller Bushbuck and the larger Kudu, forming a unique trio within the antelope family. In Mozambique, Nyala populations thrive in the lush regions south of the Zambezi River. These areas provide the dense woodlands, thick bush, and riverine habitats that Nyala favour. The well-conserved landscapes of Mozambique support healthy populations of these shy, water-dependent animals, making it a prime location for observing and hunting Nyala. Spot-and-stalk hunting methods are commonly employed, with the best chances of success occurring during the early morning and late afternoon. The Nyala’s elusive nature and preference for secluded areas present a challenging yet rewarding pursuit for hunters in the rich and diverse ecosystems of Mozambique. Nyala is classified as a species of least concern by the IUCN, no special hunting permits are required other than a valid license.
