Mountain Reedbuck hunting in South Africa

Mountain Reedbuck is a medium-sized antelope with similar colouring to a White-tailed Deer and forward curving horns that are shorter than its larger close relative, the Common Reedbuck. A water dependent species found in mountainous areas, they prefer to graze on rocky slopes inaccessible to many other species where they can blend in with their surroundings while resting during the heat of the day. This diurnal species is most active in the early morning and late afternoon. Their alarm call is a high pitched nasal whistle, used to alert the herd of imminent danger. The Mountain Reedbuck are mostly found in small herds of up to eight females with young. However herds of 20 – 30 strong can be found on some game ranches in the Eastern Cape where they are hunted as management animals to control their numbers. Besides the Eastern Cape, the Mountain Reedbuck can be hunted in many provinces, including Limpopo, Free State, KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga and North West. They are classified as a species of least concern by the IUCN and no special hunting permits are required.
