Mongoose hunting in South Africa

Numerous mongoose species can be hunted in South Africa. This includes the Yellow Mongoose, Slender Mongoose, White-tailed Mongoose, Water Mongoose, Banded Mongoose and Dwarf Mongoose. Mongooses are generally hunted as a trophy of opportunity. Specialised dedicated hunts are available for those specifically targeting these species. The different species of mongoose do not all occur in the same areas and if you are specifically interested in hunting these species, numerous outfitters scattered over the country offer a variety of mongoose hunts. Some mongooses are diurnal and others nocturnal. So depending which species you are after you may need to book with an outfitter who offers night hunts. The only way to hunt these critters is to drive around either in the day or night where these animals are known to occur and hope for the best. Some species exist in colonies, while some of the nocturnal species are solitary animals which can make for a difficult hunt. Classified as a species of least concern by the IUCN, some provinces require hunting licenses and a night hunting permit.
