Limpopo Bushbuck hunting in South Africa

Limpopo Bushbuck, an eye-catching medium-sized antelope belong to the spiral-horned group of African animals. As their name would imply they are associated with the Limpopo River, which forms a border between Botswana, Zimbabwe and South Africa before entering Mozambique. Limpopo Bushbuck are mostly hunted in the riverine areas of the Limpopo River but found throughout the Limpopo Valley and further into the Waterberg, Soutpansberg and Drakensberg Mountains ranges of the Limpopo and Mpumalanga provinces. They also occur in the riverine areas and forests of the Lowveld. A slow walk and stalk along the Limpopo River in the early morning or late afternoon often leads to a successful hunt. Being a water-dependent species, Bushbuck are always found near water and will if necessary leave the safety of the mountains or hills (koppies) to search for water to drink during the heat of the day. Wounded Bushbuck need to be carefully approached as are known to attack both humans and their dogs during a follow-up search. Limpopo Bushbuck are classified as a species of least concern by the IUCN, no special import or export permits are required. In some areas, Bushbuck are hunted at night when feeding in planted pastures and if the property is not a registered game farm, a night hunting permit is required.
