About hunting in Mpumalanga
Mpumalanga means east or “the place where the sun rises” in the local Nguni languages. The landscape is a kaleidoscope of panoramic mountain passes, valleys, rivers, waterfalls and forests, steeped in the history of early gold miners and pioneers. Its tourist attractions include the iconic Kruger National Park and the Blyde River Canyon, the world’s third largest canyon.
The regions hunting landscapes and habitats can be divided into two distinct regions by the Drakensberg Mountains, the frost free Lowveld and the Highveld. One being low altitude relatively flat subtropical Bushveld savanna habitat. The Highveld on the other hand is a high altitude alpine grassland region that often experiences serve frost with morning and night time temperatures below freezing in winter.
The Lowveld is known as “Big Game Country”. Dangerous game is readily available on both game ranches and free-range hunts in some of the huge private and community owned game reserves with open boundaries with South Africa well known Parks. Top trophy quality species like Elephant, Buffalo, Hippo and Crocodile abound in this region. Free-range Lions and Leopard quotas are also made available by the government from time to time.
Good Waterbuck, Kudu, Nyala and Bushbuck can also be hunted in the Lowveld Bushveld. If you are after some of the less hunted species like Spotted Hyena, Serval, Civet and other small predators, this is where you need to be.
Moving inland, the vegetation and hunting conditions change completely and so do many of the plains game species. Species like Eland become more abundant and so do Blesbok. Black Wildebeest and Springbuck occur on the Highveld which do not survive in the Lowveld and there are even a few isolated pockets of Grey (Vaal) Rhebuck scattered across the highest mountains in the province.

The camp and the staff.
This buffalo hunt is very different from a bush hunt.
Hunting is not exciting.
The territory is flat with only large herbs.
You can see very far and you have to crawl.
The animals come out of the park and are not fearful (as for the zebra hunted afterwards) .
The outcome of the hunt would have been very different if the rented rifle had been a 375 instead of a 300.
It was the P.H. who killed the buffalo with his huge caliber but not me.
It's frustrating.
Maybe I should have read the announcement better.

Louis is a very good communicator! I went for a last minute 3 days hunt in his property and I had a super good time!
I understand some folks might have strong opinions about the high fence hunt. However, this is not your Texas high fence. Louis got a huge piece of property adjacent to a natural preserve where nobody could hunt. I assure you these animals do not care about the fence. They come and go as they wish!
Also, Louis reload his own ammunition for his rental rifle. As a target shooter, I have absolutely no problem with his rifle, stock was professionally bedded, trigger was adjusted and very crisp, scope has quality glasses. You might want to reconsider bringing your own rifle given the fact he got some really nice guns.

Enjoyed 5 days in a vast hunting area (over 160,000 acres) bordered by other huge hunting areas with a large variety of game . Genuine fair chase hunting across different terrains with open savannah, closer bush and mountains. Have hunted in a variety of countries including wilderness hunts e.g. mountains in Spain and Kyrgyzstan and the experience was right up there with those but the accommodation was much better!
It was my first dangerous game hunt and the guide explained everything very well and was a huge source of knowledge. The team were friendly and went out of their way e.g. with photo safari and tourism activities to make it a memorable trip.
Logistics and air port pick from the internal flight was all smooth and easy with very good communication throughout. I didn't take my own rifle and was more than happy with the quality, choice and cost of hiring a couple of different calibres and am hoping to book another trip with the team.
