Guineafowl hunting in Namibia

Only one species of Guineafowl occurs in Namibia, the Helmeted Guineafowl. Guineafowl numbers and distribution one the country decline from east to west. These birds thrive in areas with good grass cover occurs, an essential necessity for both breeding and avoiding predation. These dark-coloured, nearly black chicken size birds with white spots and blue heads, may occur in large flocks. These birds are omnivorous and feed on insects, bulbs, seeds and berries. They do exceptionally well where farmers grow grain crops like maize (corn). Apart from sport shooting these birds make for good eating. Listed as a species of least concern by the IUCN.
