Gerenuk hunting in Ethiopia

The Giraffe-necked Antelope or Gerenuk has similar colouring to an Impala. They occur in the drier eastern and southern regions of Ethiopia. Only the males have horns and the species is easily identifiable by its long neck. The Northern Gerenuk of Ethiopia is a shy, skittish species to hunt but remains a most desired species when hunting in this part of the world. A careful walk and stalk in a suitable habitat will often end up with the desired result. Gerenuk, like most antelope feed in the early morning and late afternoon. What is interesting is that they will stand on their hind legs to feed on tree leaves they cannot reach when standing on all fours. They even use their hind legs to pull down the higher unreachable branches. Their main food preferences are flowers, fruit and tender fresh leaves. Gerenuk is classified as a species of least concern by the IUCN
