Eland hunting in Botswana

Two subspecies of Eland occur in Botswana. The Cape Eland is found across most of Botswana where protected from poachers and the Livingstone Eland occurs along the boundary with Zimbabwe. This large ox-like antelope has a pronounced hump on the shoulders and dewlap. Both males and females have horns. The males have thicker bases than the females and their horns are often worn down with age. Fully mature bulls often have a very distinctive brush of hair on their muzzle. Eland are more likely to be hunted in the Kalahari Desert region of the country where they will walk long distances in search of food. Eland is classified as a species of least concern by the IUCN and all trophies may be exported.
