Where to hunt Common Reedbuck
Common Reedbuck or Southern Reedbuck are territorial and live in small family groups. They are the largest of the Reedbuck species and found in broken woodland, savannah, temperate and coastal grassland. They flourish along the grasslands of the Eastern seaboard and in the Kwa-Zulu Natal Midlands, a dairy farming area with irrigated green pastures favoured by this species. Reedbuck are hunted from Tanzania in the north down to north-eastern territories of South Africa. It is commonly found in parts of Zimbabwe and Zambia where it is protected from poachers and prowling dogs. Its most westerly distribution ends on the floodplains of North-eastern Namibia. Being a predominantly grassland species, it was historically absent from the arid and semi-arid regions of Namibia and South Africa.

Common Reedbuck are hunted in South Africa with trophy fees ranging from $800-$1,500. Trophy fees vary significantly according to individual territories due to availability. The daily rates for a plains game hunt in South Africa are in the vicinity of $350-$450 per day. In Zambia, Zimbabwe and Mozambique you will be required to book a minimum of a 7-10 day hunt, with a daily rate of $600-$700 and pay a trophy fee of approximately $1000 for a Common Reedbuck and in Tanzania trophy fees are around $1,500.
When to hunt Common Reedbuck?
Reedbuck may be hunted all year round In South Africa and Zimbabwe. In Mozambique the season is open from April 1 to November 30. The Zambian hunting season runs from the beginning of May to the end of November. In Tanzania the season is from July to December. The best months for hunting Southern Reedbuck in Southern Africa are the winter months of June to August when these animals are likely to sun themselves first thing in the morning and at last light. Full moon is not a good time to hunt Reedbuck as they tend to feed all night and rest up for most of the day.

Due to their habit of enjoying first and last light, this is one of the best times to hunt them as they bed down in long grass or reed beds during the heat of the day. The best way is to find some high ground overlooking a marsh and glass the area carefully. Once located, mark the spot as carefully as possible and head towards your prey in order to cut down the shooting distance. Once you get closer the stalk will commence until you are in a position to take a shot. Sometimes the animal may unfortunately nestle down to bed and then you should use your scent to flush the animal. They normally whistle, jump up and take off and may stop to look back offering you a shot.
Why hunt Common Reedbuck?
Similar to a Whitetail in colour and size, hair texture, with horns instead of antlers, other than continents there is little difference between the coloration and size of the species. They even seem to share some of those elusive hunter evasion tactics. Budget wise, this is an affordable species that should not be overlooked when the opportunity arises. It makes for a great shoulder mount or even a European skull mount on a shield looks pretty awesome. If you want to keep the natural look of the horns, ensure your taxidermist does not polish them. Reedbuck venison is regarded by many as some of the best game meat in Africa.
