When to hunt Brown Hyena?
Hyena may be hunted year round In South Africa and Zimbabwe. The Namibian hunting season is from February 1 to November 30. The best months to hunt Hyenas are the cooler winter months especially if you are baiting as the baits last longer before going really rancid even though hyenas are not averse to eating really rotten meat. Also try to avoid drought periods where dying and dead animal carcasses litter the countryside. Lambing and calving season should also be avoided when afterbirths and easy to kill lambs are plentiful. During these periods Hyenas will not respond well to baiting when all this carrion is readily available

Brown Hyenas are nocturnal and seldom seen during the day. They have adapted to a scavenging lifestyle and will travel large distances in search of food. They are fond of visiting dump sites and the bone pile at the back of the skinning shed where the skinners dump unwanted hooves, bones and guts. They have an exceptional sense of smell and will be attracted to a bait pile where you can build or set up a pop-up blind. Being scavengers, they can be baited on the ground in areas where Bushpigs do not commonly occur. As with Spotted Hyenas, pre-baiting is recommended.

Why hunt Brown Hyena?
Brown Hyenas are also called a ‘Standwolf’ which when translated from Afrikaans (Dutch) means ‘Beach Wolf’. These bone crushers make the most impressive full mounts with their long shaggy brown coats. Due to the fact that they have incredibly powerful jaws, their skulls make an interesting skull mount to compare to the other large predators in your trophy collection. They are hunted as vermin for killing domestic stock on many properties throughout South Africa and Namibia, so if you shoot one you will be doing the territory owner a favour.
