Bontebok are closely related to the Blesbok, and in many cases hybridised. This species was endemic to the Western Cape, originally roaming in huge numbers until nearly hunted into extinction in the early 1800s. The Bontebok is more vividly coloured than a Blesbok with a white patch on the hindquarters around the base of the tail and black horns as opposed to the lighter coloured horns of a Blesbok. Both males and females have horns with males being easier identifiable by their thicker bases. Being an open plains animal they are predominantly hunted in the Free State, Northern Cape, Western and Eastern Cape. They are a water dependent species and can be hunted at any time of the day. Due to its rarity, it is an expensive animal to hunt, normally only hunted by collectors. It is a CITES II listed species and the USFWS requires additional importation permits if imported back into the USA. Prior to hunting your Outfitter needs to apply for a Threatened or Protected Species (TOPS) permit. Hunters should also insist on proof that the property is registered with the South African Bontebok Management Program.
