Black-Backed Jackal hunting in South Africa

Jackals are like small Coyotes. Of the two Jackal subspecies found in South Africa, the most commonly hunted is the Black-backed Jackal found throughout the region. As described in the name, this Jackal has a black saddle back with tawny red flanks. The other Jackal, the Side-striped Jackal is only found in the far eastern extremities of the country. Jackals are considered as vermin by most landowners and shot on sight. In many instances the trophy fee is waived and on some properties you will be requested to destroy any Jackals if the opportunity arises. They can be hunted anywhere in the country but become extremely cunning when persecuted on site. Jackals are nocturnal animals and may be encountered any time during the day while resting up. They are also frequently seen in the early mornings and late afternoon. Some outfitters have elaborate hunting rigs, with swivel chairs and camouflage netting to cover the vehicle when hunting at night. Jackals respond well to predator callers but often circle around the suspicious sound approaching from downwind in an effort to pick up any strange scent. Classified as a species of least concern by the IUCN, no special hunting permits are required.
