Beisa Oryx hunting in Ethiopia

Beisa Oryx is also known as East African Oryx. These animals look very similar to the more fawn-coloured Gemsbuck found in Southern Africa. Beisa Oryx have a grey coat and white belly, separated on the flanks by a black stripe. The face markings are dominated by a black forehead, white muzzle and two black stripes running through the eyes and the other below the ears and upper throat. Beisa Oryx may be hunted in the semi-arid dry savanna grasslands, scrublands and lowland regions of Ethiopia. Beisa Oryx are a water-independent nocturnal species. By feeding at night, they can absorb enough moisture from the plants to sustain themselves. Another adaptation to living in these hot humid conditions is the antelope’s ability to regulate their body temperature. They are best hunted early in the morning whilst grazing as they have fantastic eyesight and are quick to detect the slightest of movements. Beisa Oryx is listed as an endangered species by the IUCN and no CITES import or export permits are required. However, a prearranged hunting license is required before the hunt commences.
