Baboon hunting in Mozambique

Baboons can be hunted throughout the country. Two species of Baboon can be hunted in Mozambique, namely the Chacma and Yellow Baboon. Both species look very similar. These large brown primates have a dog-like faces with prominent canines. Being omnivores, they feed on a diverse diet of grass seeds, wild fruit, flowers, berries, rhizomes, mushrooms, insects, nestlings and even kill young antelope calves. The general rule of thumb is that Chacma Baboons are hunted south of the Zambezi River (Southern Mozambique) and Olive Baboons north of the Zambezi River (Northern Mozambique) eastwards of the town of Tete. These extremely adaptable animals live in a variety of habitats and the main habitat requirements are rocky cliff-face roosting sites or large trees where they can sleep at night to avoid the nocturnal predators. They have exceptional eyesight and post sentries to keep a lookout for danger in order to protect the troop. If alarmed, they let out a loud bark as a warning to the troop. CITES permits are required for the import and export of Baboons to control the international trade in primates. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) also have special import regulations for the importation of Baboon trophies into the USA.
