The world’s largest and flightless bird is native to the savanna, semi-arid and desert regions of Africa and classified into two species, the Somali Ostrich and the Common Ostrich which comprises three huntable subspecies. The most commonly hunted Ostrich is the Southern Ostrich which is mainly hunted in Namibia and South Africa. It is also available for hunting in Botswana. The Red-necked, Masai and Somali Ostrich are found in East Africa with the latter species only occurring in north eastern Ethiopia. The Masai Ostrich can be hunted in Tanzania while on Safari.

They have excellent eyesight and hearing. When alarmed they will run away at an incredible speed covering ground at a rapid speed creating distance between you and your target preventing any chance of a shot. The best method to hunt Ostrich is on foot once sighted from a distance. Then you need to start stalking them using as much cover as possible. Normally only males are hunted and it is very difficult to hunt these birds when in a flock, so look for a single bird before starting your stalk. If you are bow hunting, the best way to hunt is from a blind with a bait site as they do not need water on a regular basis.
