Where to hunt Thomson's Gazelle

Thomson’s gazelle is the smallest of the gazelle species. Gazelle’s are named after the Persian word Ghazel that means elegant and quick, a name aptly suited to this species that can reach speeds over 80 km/h (50 mph) when pursued by a predator. Thomson’s gazelle is smaller than Grant’s gazelle and easily identifiable by the black stripe on their sides. This species can only be hunted in Masailand Tanzania.

When to hunt Thomson's Gazelle?

Thomson’s gazelle may only be hunted from July - December, this is the country’s official hunting season. However, the onus is on the Tanzanian government to decide on any changes to these regulations. If late rains have occurred, hunting during the early season should be avoided if possible. Thomson’s gazelles are mixed feeders eating high-quality grasses, shrubs and herbs. To avoid predation from Cheetah and Wild Dogs, these animals spend most of their day on the open plains to evade these predators. During the dry season, they will drink water but are mostly water independent species. They may drink every third to fourth day when water is available.

Способы охоты

Feeding and resting on the open plains during the day makes for a difficult stalk. Thompson’s gazelles have fantastic eyesight and need to be spotted at a distance from the vehicle. Once the herd has been glassed over and a possible trophy identified, the hunters will take off on foot using as much cover as possible to approach their targeted animal. However, as is their habit of remaining out in the open short grassed plains, means that stalking can be quite tricky and often the hunter will be required to make a long shot.

Why hunt Thomson's Gazelle?

Being classified as an affordable “Masailand Special” makes these animals a sought-after trophy. They are regarded as the epitome of a typical East African plains game hunt. They make outstanding shoulder mounts and for gazelle collectors it is a must in any trophy room. The meat also makes for a good campfire dinner.
