Genet cat hunting in Ethiopia

Genets belong to the mongoose family and in appearance look more like a weasel. Both the Large-spotted Genet and Small-spotted (Common) Genets occur in Ethiopia. Their colouring is very similar, the one has larger spots than the other and the Large-spotted Genet has a black tip to its tail, whilst that of the Small-spotted Genet is white. Genets are nocturnal and pretty ferocious beasts for their size. They feed mainly on rodents and birds. Most locals do not tolerate them as they can cause immense damage when they get into a chicken coop. During the day, Genets rest up in hollow tree trunks and in the branches of a tree. Often their presence is given away by the birds making a racket, much like they do at the sight of a snake. Genets are hunted as a trophy of opportunity. They are often attracted to the camps and in many instances will react to squeaky mouse-like calls. Genets are classified as a species of least concern by the IUCN, no special export permits are required.
