Waterbuck hunting in Cameroon
We found 1 hunt
Waterbuck have long shaggy hair and as their name would insinuate are a water-dependent species often found on flood plains and river banks, never far from water. Cameroon has only one species of Waterbuck, the Defassa Waterbuck which is easily identifiable as it does not have a white ring on its hind quarters and is much darker in a colour. Only the males have spectacular forward-shaping horns.
Waterbuck is a water-dependent species that prefer the wetter areas found in the savannahs regions of Cameroon.
Waterbuck are mostly hunted for their horns. They have long hairy coats that are tainted by a foul-smelling oil glands that produce a waterproof substance. For this reason, their meat was often overlooked by hunters who have now realised that if you skin the animal carefully so that the hair does not touch the meat, the venison is quite palatable.
Waterbuck may be hunted with a prearranged hunting licenses and are classified as a species of least concern by the IUCN, no special import and export permits are required.
