Always a great time!

Dirk and Jen are two of the hardest working guides I've met. They've always gone above and beyond to make sure I'm having the best hunt I can. That doesn't always mean I'm able to harvest an animal but it's never due to lack of hard work by Dirk and Jen or opportunities to get on game. Hunting with GPO is like visiting good friends I only get to see but once a year.

I can't say there was anything I didn't like about the time and experience with GPO. They are 1st class.

Wyoming hunt

Dirk and Jenn are not just really good outfitters they are really good people. This was a father son hunt we put together and considered by us to be a once in a lifetime event. Dirk and Jenn made the trip better than we thought it would be. We both filled our deer and antelope tags with time to spare. They connected us with a meat processor and drove home without having the processing task ahead of us. Great trip.

Fantastic Hunt!

Everything! The hospitality, food, professionalism of the stalking of the animals, consistently making sure that you comfortable and having a great time! I am disabled with only 10 percent of my heart and Dirk and Jen did a fabulous job making sure that I was ok throughout all of the stalks.

The hunt ended too soon. We really loved our experience with Dirk & Jen. God Bless!

Huge opportunity missed

The accommodations were phenomenal we were put up in a very nice house with trout stream in front. Food was excellent. Area we hunted in Big Horns was absolutely beautiful and there were animals there.

After being on a few guided hunts that have been excellent i feel i have a basis to speak from. I understand that we are free range hunting and awesome hunt/awesome experience doesnt necessarily equal kill. The good points were accommodations, food, and Chad our guide worked his butt off. Now for thr but.....this is likely the last "big hunt" i will do with my 72yo father. We had a great time together so our goal was met. My irritation with this outfit wasnt that they didnt put effort out when we were there. As i said Chad worked his butt off. There appeared to have been zero homework done. They obviously hunt the area alot as they knew their way around well. It appeared this somewhat worked against them as there were no cows to be found where they normally hunted 😔. It had tbe appearance that they would go where they always go knock down a couple easy cows and done but the elk didnt read the script. They knew where elk normally are but not where they were or had been in the past week. Obviously a red flag that showed up a bit late ☹. Whether this is how they roll or they simply underestimated an "easy" cow hunt i dont know. We ultimately never saw a huntable cow elk. There was a herd in town in a green field. And we saw 6 on private property otherwise nada.

Hi Donald, I’m sorry you feel like you and your father were shorted on your hunt. Yes, you are correct in saying that we know the area very well. We spent over half the year in the area we were hunting your cow elk and know it like the back of our hand. It is essentially our second home. You pointed out that the cows were not where we thought they should be. Our cow hunts, which was explained to you, are a migrational hunt as they do not let us hunt them on the national forest with that tag. We wanted you and your father to come later in the year when the elk are pushed down where we were hunting. The dates of your hunt were chosen by you and advised against by us but you wanted those dates because you and your father were already going to be out here with a different outfitter hunting antelope. We explained what the cow hunt was and that those dates were not ideal but you still wanted to go through with those dates since they made the most sense to you with being out here already and not wanting to make a second trip. At no point did we ever say this was an “easy” hunt. Wether it be a cow elk hunt or a bull elk hunt, they are still a wild animal living in a very large area. No high fences to be found around here. There is a lot of ground that we could not cover given the health conditions of your party. We can only go where you can go as it does not do us any good to get into the elk without you. We always tell our clients to be in their best physical condition when coming on a hunt because it will add to your chances of success. It sounds like you had a great trip spending time with your father and that’s what we like to do. We sell an experience, not an animal but we do our darndest to help you be successful in filling your tag. On your hunt you talked about all of your high fence hunts and I’m sorry that wasn’t what this hunt was. I hope maybe this year you and your father can find an easier hunt to go on together as family as you know is very important. Once again, I’m sorry that you feel shorted as you did not fill your tags but we did not hide any information and told you everything we would be up against. We were highly successful in our elk hunts in November/December. Hope you and your father are doing well.

Good hunting experience

Excellent Hunting Adventure

My son and I just completed a hunt for cow elk with Jen and Dirk. The accommodations were fantastic, the food was excellent, and the hunting experience was great. Jake and I both filled our tags on the first day of the hunt in the afternoon. We had to retrieve the meat on the next day due to the late time of the kill. Dirk went out of his way to make that happen, and get permission for us the be on a neighboring land owner's property to get my elk. If you are looking for a great hunt, and an excellent hunting experience Dirk and Jen will provide that for you. We will be hunting with them again in the future !!!!!!!!!

Don't Trust this Outfitter

The food was excellent.

I didn't like being lied to. I booked this hunt 8 months in advance to assure we would only have my father and myself in camp for the best possible chance of a mountain loin for one of us. He told me up front that getting 2 loins is hard, getting more than 2 lions is extremely difficult. But we should have no problem getting one with a good opportunity to get two lions. That is why he said to me he never books more than 2 hunters in a week for lions. Upon communication days before us leaving he informed me there would be another lion hunter there in camp. Which I questioned him on and he assured that this wasn't his client but in fact it was his guides brother who would be in camp hunting for a lion, but he told me that this hunter wasn't even going to be in our area for hunting lions and basically he worded it as it's just another mouth at the table that's all. However upon arriving there I was told I would be sleeping with my father and not have a room to myself as the hunt was originally booked for because my room was going to the third lion hunter. He wanted me to share a queen size bed for two grown adult men. I ended up sleeping a week on a cot for $5500. We ended up running into the third hunter multiple times through out the hunt. In fact when the third hunter killed his lion, I asked the hunter where did you get the lion at? The next day my guide took me to the same trail head that the third hunter just killed his lion at. This was in my area and this was the same trail head we had been driving past for the first two days of my hunt. I was taken in on areas where we drove on roads that were marked closed.In fact later on that day we were stopped by the DNR and questioned as to why we were in the vehicle closed zone. My guide instructed me to remain quite and he would handle it. After questioning and detaining us, we lost third of the hunt day. Speaking about hunt days, on BYH website my hunt was scheduled for Feb. 2nd through Feb. 8th for hunting. The day before I left they contacted me to ask it I would be arriving on January 31st so my hunt could start on Feb. 1st. It was at that time I told them that I have a receipt from BYH, 8 months ago that stated my hunt start date was Feb. 2nd. They said no worries arrive when you can. I said I don't want to be shorted on my hunt. They assured me no worried I wouldn't be. So I arrived early afternoon on Feb. 1st so my hunt could start the next day as scheduled. On the evening of Feb. 7th, our 6th day of the hunt. After dinner the outfitter notified us that our hunt was over and we would be leaving in the morning. They didn't even feed us breakfast that morning. At that time on Feb. 7th was the first time we found one set of fresh cougar tracks. My guide Tyler had great expectations for the next morning hunt. These were the first and only fresh tracks that either my father or myself seen. We questioned Dirk the outfitter on why we couldn't hunt the next day like we were supposed to. He informed us that we arrived on Feb. 1st, late late afternoon, but they took us out for about two hours towards evening by driving us up the mountain, leaving us to sit in the truck, while they drove off on snowmobiles, arriving a hour or so later and took us back to the cabin. Dirk said that counted as our 1st day of the hunt. Even though they wanted in their text messages to me that they wanted us to arrive the day before our hunt was to start to get settled in. He wanted us to pay the remaining due with cash and he collected cash as soon as we arrived before settling in the cabin. I added this part in because the website BYH does not show the final payment. Every morning Dirk said he calls in to hear the lion report for our area. Never sharing this information with me. I finally had my wife call the DNR and received the lion report hotline number. It seems the quota for our area is 20 lions and 17 have already been killed. That leaves 3 lions left, for three hunters, not to mention the other hunters he had booked already for the next couple of weeks that I know of. Dirk cares more about taking money than being fair in giving hunters a true opportunity to hunt a lion. Also note that out of those 17 lions killed, Dirk only had killed one lion this whole 2018-2019 lion season. That lion was the one the guides brother shot. The hunter that was not even supposed to be in camp with us. So basically that lion should have been my fathers or mine. This man cannot be trusted. He lies to suit his pocket. I have saved all communications that I could to back my claims up. On a side note, on my second day of the hunt, my snow mobile broke and for the rest of the hunt all we could do was drive the truck on roads only. Therefore we could never get back to the top of the mountain to hunt. This was the first time using BYH website. My father and I have hunted all over north america finding our own guides. Just like the Alaska brown bear hunt we will be going on this year. I hope your other outfitters you have listed on your site are better than this one. I was thinking about booking a bison hunt on BYH website but I'm having second guesses now.

Jim, First off, you were never lied to. Everything was presented to you in an upfront manner and nothing was ever hidden. You were never told it would be just you and your father, Phil. You were told that the hunt was 1x1 and that you and your father would each have your own guide, which you did. And the fact that you say that I don’t book more than two hunters in a week is untrue and I’m not sure where you had come up with that. Also, you said that we said the other hunter was not a client but in fact was our guides brother is also untrue. We told you there was another client in camp and that client was being guided by YOUR guides brother, who is also one of our guides. As for the rooming situation, your father had assured me he was bringing his own bed as he has a bad back and he needed a certain bed to be comfortable. Also, you chose the cot and were given other bedding options and were happy with it all week. As for the area hunting, we hunt in several different hunt areas. A third area that we generally hunt closed as the quota as met. We hunted roughly 150 miles of mountain range. As for Nathan’s lion (the other client) he was more than happy to depart the pickup and hike canyons in search for lions and that is how he helped ensure his success. You had hiked for a very short time one day and then refused to leave the pickup again. As far as the encounter with the Game and Fish officer, he was a young rookie officer who had never been in the area as you know because you were there. Tyler showing him the boundaries is hardly being detained. And as for driving past the trailhead that they killed Nathan’s lion off of every morning, we all did as it was right out the door of the cabin we stayed in. And I assure you, you never ran into Nathan and Brandon while hunting other than right at the lodge or passing on the main road to the gas station as there is only one gas station within 50 miles. The hunt dates was apparently a miscommunication between myself and BYH. You and I had great communication regarding the hunt dates. You were unsure as to exactly when you were going to get there because of weather and we said we could either start the hunt on Feb 1 or Feb 2 depending on your travel. The night before you got there we talked and you stated that you would like to start hunting right when you got into camp. Your guides had been out since 5 am that morning looking for tracks to get a good line on one for when you got to camp. They came back, helped you get settled and then went hunting as you had requested. I have the emailed conversation of that as proof as well. When the last hunt day had come you and your father, Phil both slipped several times that it was your last day and then at dinner pretended to be absolutely dumbfounded by the fact it was your last. Which was funny to us as you and Phil had both mentioned it was your last day a couple times throughout the day. For the snowmobile breaking down. Yes, Tyler’s snowmobile broke down, you forgot to mention though that he went out and bought another snowmobile that same night to be sure you were not left without one, even though we had several others in camp too. You were stuck to the truck because that was what you had wanted. Yes, we settle up and get final payment when a hunter arrives to camp. That is how that works, do you let someone at your taxidermy shop come in and pick up their animal without final payment? I would assume not. You had stated that you wanted to bring cash for your final payment. We had given you the option of cash, check or credit card. You also tried to short us on your final payment by $250 each. We had to pull up the BYH contract to show you what the final payment was in order to get all of the money you owed. Then you tried to short us on what you’d owe for extra days. We have set prices for everything, including extra days and we do not vary those prices so there is never any confusion. So trying to pull a fast one on us, does not work. You stated we had 3 lions left for your hunts and then our next clients. Although you are trying to portray you know what you are talking about by having your wife call and get the lion quota information, you also have to know that there are 31 different lion areas in the state of Wyoming and we are authorized in 8 of them, some of which have an unlimited quota. You have zero idea as to where I was going to be running my other hunters. Upon investigating your taxidermy business, we found that under some of your negative reviews, there were other guides/outfitters that had the same complaints we had as you were trying to short them money, downright rude the entire hunt and very untrustworthy humans. I feel we could have killed two 180 LB lions and your review wouldn’t have been any different. You and Phil were incredibly rude to me and my entire family, including my children. We run a family camp and have never had problems with hunters being rude to my wife and children. It takes a small man to be rude to small children ages 8 and 9 months. You say I’m only in it for the money but anyone who knows me knows that’s far from true and we have several references to back that up. I do wish BYH had a review for clients as we would like to warn other outfitters of the type of clients you and your father are. There are not many people we wouldn’t welcome back to camp but you both are not welcome back. OUTFITTER BEWARE OF JIM & PHIL TAYLOR. Mountain Lion Hunt Feb 2019

First off Dirk and his team Flat out does everything to get it done! The accommodations were great from the food with special requests to the view from the "cabin" (which is a beautiful house not a cabin). My 10 year old son and I went on a mountain lion (for me) / Bobcat (for him) Hunt. Tyler the guide kept him entertained and had him spotting tracks the first day. Unfortunately he came down with the Flu but Dirk even stayed behind with him so that I could continue my hunt. If you have never hunted behind dogs it is amazing to watch they are truly professional. While I did get a very nice cat with a big head the comradery and hunt quality would have me going back alone. I have already started working with them on a hunt for next year. Thanks again guys

Hunting with dirk and Jennifer was amazining ! Not only was the hunting great but Dirk and Jennifer are the best outfitters in Wyoming . Very family oriented business and Dirk himself is a second generation outfitter . Every expectation I had was exceeded and I will be coming back to hunt with dirk every year . Don’t waste your time paying way to much for a unfriendly inexperienced guide . Dirk and Jen give you the best bang for the hunt every time !

Hunt in Wyoming

This was my second hunt with GPO, every time we come it is such a wonderful experience. This was also my first big game hunt solo. I was very nervous however they were so welcoming and assisted me in many ways to be able to get my pronghorn. I love the welcoming feel that they provided, great food, atmosphere, lodging and overall experience. I highly recommend GPO they are a great company to go with either on your first hunt or your 100 hunt! Can’t wait to book with them again and go on another adventure!

Trip of a lifetime

This was my brother-in-law and my first trip hunting out west. I have to say, this was a trip of a lifetime. Dirk and Jen were amazing. They worked very hard provide the best possible experience in every aspect. Food was fantastic, deer everywhere, and great people. We can’t thank them enough for their hard work and attentiveness. We plan on coming back! Hunting isn’t easy and there are no guarantees but dirk did everything in his power to give us the best chance and we were successful. Will never forget our time at GPO.

Great Adventure

The hospitality and home cooked meals were amazing. Dirk and Jen worked very hard to make sure we had everything we needed for an amazing stay and hunt. Dirk was extremely knowledgeable about the land, deer movement and patterns, and where and how to hunt the big bucks. He was very helpful in helping to understand how to properly glass and stalk. Besides that, both him and Jen have great personalities. Shared a lot of fun stories and laughs. Cannot wait to go back out with these two again.

Easy and honest

Good communication, easy to get along with. Dirk and Jen were both very easy to get along with and accommodating. I planned on enjoying my entire week, but dirk got me on a good buck on the very first morning and I just couldn't pass it up! They were more than happy to have me hang out for a few days, but I elected to come back home and try to get on another deer. Next time, ill stay longer!

Dirk and Jen are fantastic people and along with their guides worked relentlessly to locate mountain lions over extremely difficult terrain and less than ideal tracking conditions. Three lions were treed during the week, and even if I had not get one I would absolutely recommend GPO. I look forward to seeing them again in a future adventure.

Lack of transparency

Outfitter didn't tell us until the first day of the hunt that his prairie dog town had been wiped out by the plague. He arranged another property for the hunt but we had less than 75 shots for 3 hunters and 3 days of hunting. Offered for us to hunt again next year for free, but that just means more travel expenses for us and trusting him again.

Hi Marita! I'm sorry you feel that way. Yes, we had a prairie dog plague on our personal property but we were still able to secure thousands of acres for you to hunt during your time here and had several other groups that had come and had the time of their life on the same property that you hunted. You can actually read their recent reviews and they were all great. They loved the wide open scenery, the mountains in the background and everything else that goes along with being in the great state of Wyoming as well as shooting some prairie dogs. This ranch was also closer to town and a lot more convenient to get to. It seemed you might have been a little 'green' when it came to hunting, which is why we tried to give you our tips and tricks of how to shoot these prairie dogs. One thing we mentioned several times was to start out shooting the rimfire rifles that you brought. This is less 'shocking' to the prairie dogs as they are much quieter and will stay up much longer. But you were adamant on starting out with the larger rifles. Another factor was the weather, during really hot days and during wind, the prairie dogs are less active. Unfortunately, as much as I wish we could control this, we can't. But we did allow you to start your hunt days very early in the morning and stay as late as you wanted. We even told you that going to town for some lunch during the heat of the day and shooting in the evenings again would be best. But you generally stayed through the heat of the day and went back to town once it started to cool off. When we'd go back out to get your shooting benches, there was prairie dogs by the masses and we were very bummed that you were not there to enjoy that. Which is why we mentioned several times you were welcome to stay as late as you wanted out there and gave you our insight as to what the prairie dogs were doing. I appreciate that you spoke up during your hunt and sent a text that you were unhappy as we can't fix it if we don't know that there is an issue .The most unfortunate part was that when we tried to meet up and talk with you about your concerns the response was always, " my husband is extremely mad right now and talking would not be productive " That sure makes it hard on us to be able to fix things. We did offer for you to come back for free next year at a different ranch we also hunt at for some different scenery and some more prairie dog hunting, which is even more money out of our pocket as well as we have to pay these ranchers a fee for the use of their land, but were willing to do so to try to please your husband. There was definitely adequate prairie dogs on the land you were hunting and the lack of shooting has to do with the issues we mentioned above, not a lacking of prairie dogs. We tried hard to help you and were met with a wall of anger each time. That doesn't leave us with many options to help you, but we did try.

Excellent hunting experience

GPO is an excellent outfitter!

This was both my wife and mine first hunting experience in Wyoming, chasing Antelope. We booked with Great Plains Outfitter (GPO) and they did an excellent job! Dirk and Jen Jenkins were extremely helpful in responding in a timely fashion and answering any questions leading up to the hunt. The hunting was awesome, as we saw a lot of Antelope and tagged out with a rifle on a very nice buck first day, even though conditions were a little tough due to a snow storm shortly before our hunt. GPO’s guide Chance helped us tremendously and I definitely would not have gotten a shot at my Antelope without his guidance. He lived up to Dirk’s title of an Antelope Slayer! Unfortunately my wife did not draw a tag but Dirk and Jen were gracious enough to let us roll over a hunt with them in 2022 for my wife. We are both super excited about returning next year to hunt with the GPO group. Everyone at GPO was super friendly, food, accommodations and hunting were all great. Thank you Jen, Dirk, and Chance!

I love coming to Wyoming to hunt with Dirk and Jen. They are so nice and know the areas and where to find the game animals. I've hunted antelope and turkey and come home both times with trophies of a lifetime. This isn't some high fence hunt, you are out hunting just like everyone else does in the west. Don't sit here and read this and think about booking, just do it! Trust me, you wont be disappointed.

I had so much fun just hanging out and chatting, getting plans together for our hunt, and of course being successful! Dirk and his guides clearly did their homework to make sure I was best positioned to get a turkey and I cannot thank them enough. Fantastic outfitter!

I can't rate GPO any higher. Dirk & Mandy provided exceptional food and hospitality. Our guide, Brayden, was hard working and conscientious. Wyoming had a hard 22-23 winter so we were a little worried about the numbers and quality of animals we would see....our worries were unfounded. We saw numerous antelope and mule deer every day. My wife and I both filled our antelope tags while hunting over water holes. Brayden led me on a perfect stalk on a nice 4by velvet mule deer...the big one lived to see another day when he stood up with sage brush covering his vitals. This was our first time hunting antelope and mule deer, we couldn't be any happier with the experience and we hope to go back again.

Planning my next hunt

I had always wanted to hunt out west and this adventure didn’t disappoint. Even though the deer population was way down and competitive, our guide found areas on the map no one was hunting and now I’m heading home with a great buck in the back of the truck. They truly cared about us having a great experience, all around, and worked tirelessly to make it happen. I’ll be reaching out to them again for my next hunt!

The owner has a lot of things going on so we didn’t talk much before our trip. My advice is to be proactive, if you have questions then call him.

Great Family Fun

Dirk put us on a great spot to shoot Prarie dogs. We got to the Prarie dog town an hour after daylight and had our fill of shooting by 2 pm. My 9 and 11 year old daughters pulled the trigger until they were tired of it. Beautiful scenery, tons of shooting, and Dirk was accommodating to our experience level. We travel and hunt extensively so he just set us up and let us be. A perfect outfit for us. I’m most likely going to book again!

Great experience

Dirk and his crew were exceptional They worked hard and everyone in camp walked away successful The food was great. Was a very fun family atmosphere I would reckoned this hunt to anyone.
