Baboon hunting in Cameroon

The huntable Baboon species found in Cameroon is called the Olive or Anubis Baboons. Although they look similar to their close cousins, the Chacma Baboon, the Olive Baboon is the most extensively distributed Baboon across Africa. Their name is derived from the colour of their coat, which is a shade of olive-brown when seen from a distance. Baboons are found in Northern and Eastern Cameroon in suitable habitats ranging from open Savannahs to forest-mosaic habitats. Baboons use large trees and cliffs to roost at night to avoid predation from nocturnal predators like Leopards. The troop is dominated by a male (dog Baboon) with a strict pecking order for the rest of the males and females alike. They communicate by using grunts, screams and dog-like barks at the sign of danger. Listed as vermin, these animals are trapped, hunted and poisoned but remain common in many areas. CITES permits are required for the import and export of Baboons to control the international trade in primates. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) also have special import regulations for the importation of Baboon trophies into the USA.
